Interoperability (healthcare IT)

Interoperability is the ability of different healthcare IT systems to exchange and make use of information, so that data recorded in one system can be understood and acted on by another rather than staying locked inside it.

In practice, this covers things like structured import of a patient's history when switching systems, sending correspondence to an NHS GP's own clinical system, and connecting to pharmacies or laboratories without re-keying information by hand.
