Sometimes a patient pays some of an invoice now and the rest later. Partial payment takes the amount they're paying and leaves the remainder outstanding, so the invoice, the patient's record and the payment link all show what's still owed.
Take a part payment
- Open the invoice: from Billing → Invoices, or from the patient's record.
- Under the invoice's actions, choose Partial payment.
- Enter how much you're taking. It must be less than the amount outstanding. To take the whole amount, use Take payment instead.
- Choose how it's being paid:
- Card on file: charge a card the patient has saved, or enter a new one.
- Card reader: tap, insert or swipe on a paired card reader.
- External: cash, bank transfer, cheque or another way you've already been paid. Jump records it.
- Read the Confirm step, then confirm.
Why the invoice is replaced
Most Jump invoices carry the platform fee, and Stripe won't take a part payment against an invoice like that. So for most invoices Jump does it in two moves, and the Confirm step tells you before anything happens:
- The original invoice is credited in full and stays on file. Nothing is deleted, and the credit note reaches your accounts as normal.
- A new invoice is raised for the same total, with your payment recorded against it and the rest outstanding. It's a separate invoice with its own reference, in Jump and in Stripe, and the two are linked on the patient's record.
- Any payment link already sent stops working. Anyone who opens the old link is sent to the new invoice. If you sent it recently, send the new link too.
If the invoice can take the payment directly, the Confirm step says This invoice can take the payment directly and nothing is replaced.
After it's taken
The success screen shows the new invoice, what's still outstanding, and what to do next: email the invoice, send the new payment link, or download the PDF. If it says Not yet on the patient's payment link, the card was charged but Stripe hasn't caught up yet. Wait before sending the link, because it still asks for the amount before this payment.
