Not every medicine a patient takes is one you manage. You can record a medication on the patient's record without taking on the prescribing yourself, and say who does manage it - their regular NHS GP, for example.
Recording one
- Open the patient's record and go to Clinical Record > Medication.
- Click Issue medication, search for the medicine, and select it.
- Under Management, set the management status to Externally managed.
- In Managed by, choose who looks after it - NHS GP, hospital consultant, private specialist, another private clinic, self-managed, and so on.
- Capture their details. For an NHS GP that is the practice; otherwise it is the organisation or clinician's name.
- Save. The medication is stored on the patient's record.
What happens once it is recorded
- It counts towards your prescribing alerts. The medicine is screened alongside the ones you prescribe, so it is taken into account the next time somebody here prescribes.
- It has its own place on the record. Externally managed medicines are grouped in their own section of the patient's medication record, so you can see at a glance what someone else is looking after, and manage those entries from there.
That is the point of recording them: the person prescribing next sees the whole list, not only the part of it your clinic wrote.
