Booking a home visit

This covers what happens once home visits are switched on and set up. If you have not done that yet, start with Home Visits: Setting Them Up - a visit cannot be booked until an appointment type offers it, a clinician has a home base, and a session is marked for visits.

A patient booking online

On your public booking page the patient picks the service as usual. Because the type can be delivered more than one way, they are asked how they would like to be seen, and Home visit sits alongside the clinic and remote options.

Choosing it changes what happens next in two ways.

The times narrow to visiting sessions only. A clinic-only session is never offered for a visit, so the patient cannot pick a slot the clinician could not travel to.

They are asked where to come. After they confirm who they are with a one-time code, Jump asks for the address to visit. This is the one step a home visit has that a clinic appointment does not.

The address is asked for every time rather than assumed, because a patient is not always at the address you hold for them - they may be convalescing at a relative's, staying with family, or want to be seen at work. Whatever they enter is the address for this visit only; it does not change their record.

It is not pre-filled today, so a patient being seen at their usual address still types it out. That is a convenience we owe them rather than a behaviour anyone relies on.

When they continue, the address is checked against the maximum visit distance set on the appointment type. If nobody who could take that appointment is close enough, the patient is told on that step rather than after choosing a time. If you set no maximum, nothing is checked.

They then confirm, and the visit is booked.

Booking one yourself

Your own team books a visit from the patient record: Actions → Book Appointment.

Choose the appointment type, then choose Home visit as the delivery, and confirm the address to travel to. Where the clinician has a home base set, the distance from it is shown as you book, so you can see at a glance whether a visit is sensible before committing to it.

The same distance limit applies. A visit further out than the type allows is blocked here too, not just on the public page.

How it appears in the diary

A booked visit is marked as one in the calendar. Instead of a clinic room it carries the address being travelled to, and any travel buffer you set is reserved either side of it, so the clinician is not double-booked while they are on the road.

Opening the appointment shows the delivery as Home visit along with the full address.

The Home Visits quick pick in the calendar sidebar filters the day down to visits only, which is the quickest way to see a clinician's visiting round on its own.

What the patient is told

A patient who books a home visit should never be left wondering whether to travel.

Confirmation and reminder emails carry an extra line naming the address and saying plainly that the clinician is coming to them:

A clinician will visit you at 12 Example Street, Milton Keynes, MK1 1AA. You do not need to travel to us.

That line only appears on home visits. A clinic or remote appointment gets exactly the email it gets today, unchanged.

In the patient portal the appointment reads as Home visit and shows the address being visited rather than one of your clinic locations. If the patient reschedules, it stays a visit and keeps its address.

Things worth knowing

  • The visit address is captured per booking, not taken from the patient record permanently. Correcting it at booking does not change the address on the record.
  • A clinician with no home base is never blocked by a distance rule - there is nothing to measure from.
  • Distances are straight-line, not driving, so allow headroom for real roads.
